Your Medicare Supplement Rate Went Up? You May Be Paying Too Much.
Medigap premiums rise over time — and some increases are steep. If your rate just jumped, a licensed insurance producer can review your options and show you what comparable coverage may cost. The review is straightforward and there’s no pressure to switch.
What’s Happening With Rates
Carriers file new rates with each state’s insurance department. Here’s one increase that just took effect — and why it matters even if you live elsewhere.
📈 Maine: United of Omaha, ~20% increase effective October 1, 2026
According to the Maine Bureau of Insurance rate chart, United of Omaha’s filed annual rates for Maine Medicare Supplement plans rose about 20% on Plans G and F effective October 1, 2026:
| Plan | Before | Now (Oct 1, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Plan G | ~$3,019/year | ~$3,623/year |
| Plan F | ~$4,053/year | ~$4,864/year |
If you’re a Maine policyholder with one of these plans, your premium likely just went up by roughly a fifth. Other carriers and other states adjust rates on their own schedules — which is why a yearly rate review makes sense wherever you live.

Maine Residents: You May Have a Special Advantage
Maine has a year-round guaranteed-issue rule for Medicare Supplement plans. That means eligible Maine beneficiaries may be able to switch to a Medigap plan of the same or lesser benefits at any time — with no medical underwriting — as long as there is no gap in coverage longer than 90 days.
No Waiting for an Enrollment Window
Maine’s rule isn’t tied to the Annual Enrollment Period. If you qualify, you can act when your rate notice arrives — not months later.
No Health Questions
Under Maine’s guaranteed-issue rule, eligible switchers generally can’t be turned down or charged more because of health conditions.
Same-or-Lesser Benefits
The rule applies when moving to a plan with equal or lesser benefits — for example, Plan G to Plan G with a different carrier, or Plan F to Plan G.
Outside Maine? A Rate Review Still Pays Off
In most states, switching Medigap plans outside your initial enrollment window can involve medical underwriting — but many people still qualify, and carriers price the same plan letter very differently.
Same Letter, Different Price
Plan G is Plan G by law — the benefits are standardized. But one carrier’s Plan G premium can be hundreds of dollars a year less than another’s in the same ZIP code.
Know Before You Decide
A licensed producer can tell you honestly whether switching makes sense for you — including whether underwriting would apply in your state.
Don’t Wait Too Long
Rate increases compound year after year. The sooner you review, the sooner you know whether you’re overpaying.

Rate Increase Questions
Why did my Medicare Supplement premium go up?
Medigap premiums typically rise as you age and as medical costs increase. Carriers also file periodic rate adjustments with each state’s insurance department. It’s normal — but it’s also a good reason to shop around.
Is the ~20% Maine increase real?
Yes. According to the Maine Bureau of Insurance Medicare Supplement rate chart, United of Omaha’s filed rates for Plans G and F in Maine rose about 20% effective October 1, 2026. Your individual premium depends on your age, rating area, and other factors.
Can I switch plans without answering health questions?
In Maine, eligible beneficiaries may switch to a same-or-lesser-benefit Medigap plan at any time under the state’s year-round guaranteed-issue rule, with no coverage gap longer than 90 days. In other states, switching outside certain windows may require medical underwriting. A licensed producer can explain your state’s rules.
Will switching save me money?
Possibly. Because Medigap benefits are standardized by plan letter, a different carrier’s Plan G covers the same benefits as your current Plan G — the difference is price and service. A rate review shows you the actual numbers before you decide anything.
Is there a fee for the rate review?
No. Licensed producers are compensated by insurance carriers when someone enrolls. The review costs you nothing, and there’s no obligation to switch.
Do you offer every plan available in my area?
No. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to the plans we do offer. For information on all of your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
