Medicare Supplement Questions, Answered Plainly
What is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan?
A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, is private insurance that works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B). It may help pay some of the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
How is Medigap different from Medicare Advantage?
Medigap works with Original Medicare and typically lets you see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, usually with higher monthly premiums. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a single private plan, often with lower premiums but with networks and copays. The right fit depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and travel habits.
Does it cost extra to get help from DT Senior Insurance?
No. Licensed producers are compensated by the insurance carriers when someone enrolls. You pay nothing extra for our guidance, and premiums cost the same as going direct to the carrier.
Can I switch Medigap plans if my rate goes up?
Possibly. In most states, switching outside your initial enrollment window may require medical underwriting, and approval isn’t guaranteed. Some states — Maine included — have special rules that make switching easier. A licensed producer can explain what applies in your state.
Will my doctors accept a Medigap plan?
Generally, any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare will accept your Medigap coverage, because Medigap pays after Medicare pays its share. We can confirm your specific doctors before you enroll.
What if my Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued?
If your Medicare Advantage plan is discontinued, you may have guaranteed-issue rights into a Medicare Supplement plan, which can mean no health questions or medical underwriting during your window. Talk to a licensed producer promptly so you don’t miss your timeframe.
Do you offer every Medigap plan available in my area?
No. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to the plans we do offer. For information on all of your options, contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE.
How fast will someone contact me?
We aim to reach out within one business day, Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm Eastern. If you’d rather not wait, call us now at 1-877-752-1350.
